Shalya Marsh is the lead maker and chief creative behind SMS (Shalya Marsh Studios).

Marsh is an artist and educator who lives and works in Morgantown, West Virginia. A native of upstate New York, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics from the State University of New York at New Paltz and an MFA from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Marsh’s handmade ceramic jewelry and tile are inspired by the textures and patterns of everyday life. The designs are influenced by growing up in an eclectic household filled with handmade things and surrounded by gardens.

In addition to a rich exhibition record, Marsh has augmented her studio practice through participation in workshops and residencies, including at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, and the Lormina Salter Fellowship at Baltimore Clayworks.
